Global Sound –
Made for www.recording-engineers.com – Upcoming Audio recording forum. We decided to compare ther Shure SM57 and 58 microphones on acoustic guitar. We made the test conditions as fair as possible and no EQ, compression or other effects were added. The same gain levels were used and the same microphone positions were utilised. The clips are (in order): -SM57 directly in front of the sound hole (0:19) -Sm58 directly in front of the sound hole (0:49) -SM57 in front of the sound hole with SM58 on pointed at the 8th fret of the neck, the levels were adjusted to make them equal in volume. (1:19) -SM58 in front of the sound hole with SM57 on pointed at the 8th fret of the neck, the levels were adjusted to make them equal in volume. (1:49) We personally preferred the last recording as it produced a more full tone with a nice top end sparkle. The others all sounded a little thin, dry and generally less pleasing. With a little bit of time spent adjusting the microphone positions, adding some reverb, EQ and and a better guitar, we think that that it could be turned into a very pleasurable sounding guitar tone. The guitar used was a cheap, £50 Falcon FG100N acoustic guitar It’s worth noting that the internals of these microphones are identicle, the shape is slightly different but the real difference lies in the grills. Either microphone can be made to sound similar to the other, regardless we thought it’d be a useful comparison for first time microphone buyers. Cheers for watching …

oh i like the 58 better from what i heard here.there both the same price in my shop but i want the 58 for vocals.i was looking at the electro voice 767a which is cheaper but its to clear and tinny for me
Thanks this was the best demo i found of them both on u tube.Every time im searching for new equipment i so gratefull that people take time to think out and put up a video demo so im confused why people leave nasty remarks when all your doing is helping them to make an informed choice.anyway was really good thanks for the demo
Whether they are or are not the same mic with different basket they do sound quite different. I prefer the sound of the 58.
hey,, which one is better
You’re confusing the SM57 for the PG58. 🙂 The PG58 lacks the windscreen basket built into the SM58. The SM57 is an alltogether different microphone though.
That guy is probably some wannabe shred guitarist who can mask his mistakes somewhat behind super fast playing and super high distortion. I thought your guitar playing skills were just fine 🙂
both these kids look weird as fuck. one has shit on his lips and the other one has open sores on his face. wtf?
No need for that sort of BOLLOCKS talk is there!!!
sm 58 winner!!
I hope that you realize that that statement is actually incorrect and there are differences between the SM58 and SM57 besides the windshield
really?
I hope that you realize that the only difference between the SM57 and the SM58 is that the 58 has a windscreen basket built onto it.
I hope that you realize that the only difference between the SM57 and the SM58 is that the 58 has a windscreen basket built onto it. You’re testing the same microphone against istelf, essentially.
